Complaint of a Lover Rebuked
Written by Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey
Translated by William Xiong
Love, that liveth and raigneth in my thought,
That built his seat within my captive brest,
Clad in the armes, wherin with me he fought,
Oft in my face he doth his banner rest.
She, that me taught to love, and suffer payne,
My doutfull hope, and eke my hot desire,
With shamefast cloke to shadow and restraine,
Her smiling grace converteth straight to yre.
And coward love then to the hart apace
Taketh his flight, wheras he lurks and plaines
His purpose lost, and dare not shew hia face.
For my lords gilt thus faultless bide I paines,
Yet from my lorde shall not my foote remove,
Swete is his death, that takes his end by love.
